Indeed, this post is not about the fundamentals or basics of coffee, but considering the time of year, I deemed it appropriate.
There truly are many wonderful things that would be appropriate for the coffee lover in your life, but one that I am particularly fond of this year is the Angels’ Cup Coffee Subscription and Tasting Club. This is the perfect gift for someone who wants to improve, or simply maintain, their coffee tasting skills. There are three different subscription plans: The Cupping Flight, The Black Box, and Angels’ Cup All Stars. What is cool about all of these plans is that they can be purchased monthly or as a one-time payment, which is the perfect gift for the coffee lover in your life.
The Cupping Flight is $8.99 a month, which is in fact the same price as Netflix, as they rightly
acknowledge. Angels’ Cup says this: “The Cupping Flight makes trying new coffees super easy and affordable. You have everything you need
and nothing you don’t. If you’re serious about coffee, the Cupping Flight is an excellent choice.” The Cupping Flight allows people, like myself, who want to improve their coffee tasting skills by sending just enough coffee for a coffee cupping session. For this plan, Angels’ Cup sends four 1oz (28.4g) packages every month, and never the same beans twice.
The Black Box is $21.99 a month and is similar to The Cupping Flight, except that it is four 2.75oz (78g) coffee packages that are shipped to you every month.
Finally, the Angels’ Cup All Stars plan is $19.99 per month for one pound of freshly roasted coffee. With regard to quantity, this is the cheapest plan. But it does not allow for the Coffee Lover to practice tasting alongside other coffees. Angels’ Cup says, “the real magic happens when you try a few coffees side-by-side, it’s the best way to learn what makes each coffee special.” But, if you are simply looking for fresh roasted coffee delivered to your door and are not worried about improving your tasting skills, this may be for you.
What is especially cool about the first two subscription programs is that they are all about “blind tasting.” This means that each bag comes without information, like the origin of the coffee beans or professional notes about the flavors and aromas in the coffee. Rather, it comes with a number-code that you can compare to a coded card that comes with the package, and you are able to type the code into their app (available on iOS, Android, and any web browser) to compare with the roaster’s notes.
